The President's 2009 Budget for Education is Not Enough to Give Kids Good Schools
President George W. Bush sent his proposed 2009 federal budget to Congress on Feb. 4.
Write to your member of Congress and let them know that the President's budget is woefully inadequate in funding for public education. Let them know that to Give Kids Good Schools, we need to fund our schools, educators, and students at levels that ensure achievement and quality.
President Bush has talked tough about holding our country's public schools and students accountable, but his proposed budget does not hold him accountable for supporting our nation's public schools.
The budget restores previous cuts to the landmark No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB), but provides nowhere near enough to help schools meet the Adequate Yearly Progress mandated by the law.
While educators know that reading is the basic building block for education, the proposed budget contains funding levels for several reading programs equal to allocations from two years ago!
Pre-school programs were cut.
Technology programs were cut.
And the most serious cuts of all were made to programs in place to address our countryメs teacher quality. Teacher quality is at the very heart of student achievement. The president is not listening to the American public, who have long voiced their support for measures to bolster the nation's teacher quality.
Make YOUR voice heard. The presidentメs proposed fiscal year 2009 budget is embarrassingly inadequate.

As always, the entire Give Kids Good Schools team thanks you for all you do to Give Kids Good Schools.
